THE SCULPTOR'S DILEMMA, A Selection From THE SUN LOVES EVERY PLANET

He couldn’t decide

If he wanted to preserve

Her essence in profile

Or if it would be more interesting

If the viewer experienced her

From the front

With her looking directly

At the observer

With an unwavering gaze

In her eyes

Seductive and alluring

Which perspective would imply

A greater sense of ambiguity

A stronger feeling of motion

He wondered

As he walked around her

Examining

The supple lines of her torso

The delicate features of her face

The gentle slope of her shoulders

He also felt torn

About the material he wanted to use

Bronze is an option

Then again

Marble would present

More of a challenge

It would also communicate

A greater sense of depth

And spatial complexity

It would be

A rather interesting contrast

Such exquisite softness and beauty

Combined

With the classical solidity of stone

He looked at her

From every point of view

Up close and at a distance

As he tried to decide

How he wanted to proceed

She was stunning

He couldn’t believe his eyes

He had never seen a woman

Like her before

Her shape was extraordinary

From every point of view

She was flawless

He had finally found the model

That would allow him to express

What he has felt

For so many years

She had a quiet beauty

A frailty

And he wanted to capture it

As best he could

Before time destroys it

And makes it mundane

He also wanted

To do something

Different and unique

With this piece

Something

He hasn’t done before

Something

That will make it special

And set it apart

From his previous work

Most of all he wanted

The piece to convey

A feeling of movement

A suggestion

That viewers would finish

In their own minds
