The general watched the German lines advancing. He turned to his officers and said,
“Gentlemen, supplies have just arrived. Wait
until they are close enough before you kill them, but don't shoot any more than
you have to. We always want to conserve
our bullets.”
He paused for a moment as he felt the snow on his face, then he looked at his men again. He filled with emotion; he knew everyone of them was ready to lay his life down for motherRussia .
“You know what to do but just to be sure, after you kill them take whatever they have on them and divide it amongst your men, cigarettes, food, chocolate, rifles, bullets, knives, clothing, etc. Then burn some of the bodies for warmth, have some of the men work on those things and have some of the men chase down the ones who run and kill every last one of them. We will advance our lines in a day or two, maybe three, but until then make sure the men have time to drink and play cards. The men coming behind us will gather the abandoned jeeps and tanks and other supplies.”
He looked at their faces. No one said a word. He knew he didn't have to tell them anything, but just to be sure he always did.
“Any questions?”
The youngest among them looked at him and said, "No, general. You have taught us well. We know what to do. Fighting for you, fighting for motherRussia is the greatest honor of my
life, of our lives.”
The general smiled at them.
“I'm going hunting. God willing I’ll bring back some fresh meat for us tonight. If not, we’ll have to be content with what the Krauts brought us.”
